Affected Areas: Liposuction defects are usually caused by aggressive and/or uneven removal of fat from the body. After surgery, there may be the appearance of peaks and valleys in areas of protruding fat that was not removed or hollow indentations where too much fat may have been extracted. Another common mistake is that simply not enough fat was extracted. Sometimes these blunders are not noticeable until changes in weight, skin tightness, and muscle tone occur.
The amount of patients experiencing undesirable post-liposuction fumbles is on the rise. With the advances in the cosmetic enhancement field becoming more popular and affordable, the number of inefficient and inexperienced surgeons is also on the rise. As with anything else, it is always better to get it right the first time. However, poor liposuction results can be improved in most cases, giving a more pleasing outcome.
How it Works: Correction requires a combination of liposculpture and fat transfer techniques. Liposculpture is used to remove excess fat in the “peaks” of problem areas, making the area smoother and creating a more even plane. Where “valleys” are present, fat is harvested from one part of the body and injected into the depressed area to raise it to the same level plane as the surrounding skin.
When the “peaks and valleys” are fairly close together, correction is performed without using liposculpture. Using Dr. Assassa's proprietary techniques, fat is shifted from the “hilly” area to the “valley.” When possible, correction is carried out through the previous incision marks, in order to avoid creating new scars.
Revising another surgeon’s work requires a higher level of skill than performing liposuction on an unaltered patient. It is important for patients to seek out experience and skill in revision liposuction in order to achieve the desired results without the need for future surgeries.
Recovery: Downtime after this procedure is minimal (a couple of days for most patients). Minor discomfort, swelling, and bruising are common. Complications can occur but are rare when the procedure is done with a qualified surgeon, and when the patient strictly follows pre-and post- operative instructions.
Results of this correction procedure can be permanent as long as transplanted fat cells survive. A need for a touch-up might be required in a few cases. The success of correcting a botched liposuction job requires patients to sustain a healthy lifestyle to optimize results.
The Process:
Consultation: 25-60 min
Procedure: 360 min per session
Downtime: 1 week at most
Recovery: 1-3 months
Duration of results: years for most patients
Revision liposuction is used to correct unsatisfactory results of a previous liposuction procedure. Poor results are often caused by improper patient evaluation, poor surgical technique, or unintended mistakes made by patients in the aftercare process.
It is part of the surgeon’s job to determine if a person is a good candidate for liposuction and where on the body liposuction can successfully be performed. Because liposuction involves body sculpting, it is essential that the surgeon be skilled at determining where to remove fat to achieve the desired body contours.
Liposuction requires the skill to sculpt the body proportionately, resulting in symmetry. An inexperienced provider may be less skilled or less familiar with liposuction techniques, and this can result in poor results that will need to be revised with additional cosmetic procedures.
Not all of the people unhappy with previous surgeries are candidates for revision liposuction. In these cases, too much fat may have been removed or further surgeries may be unwise due to the patient’s health. However, many cases of poorly done liposuction can be corrected or significantly improved by an experienced and skilled provider. Uneven fat removal or insufficient fat removal can often be corrected.
One common reason for revision liposuction is that the treated area or areas were not blended with the surrounding area, resulting in an abrupt change between the two areas. Our independent surgeon, Dr. Sam Assassa, MD, is skilled in revising this result by employing a different technique that will blend the areas for a more natural-looking appearance.
The revision surgery is performed several months after the initial procedure to give the body time to heal and for the results of the first surgery to fully develop.
